Sunshine and mild temperatures allowed the fruit plenty of time to ripen on the vine, leading to lush Merlot and spicy Cabernet Franc components. The nose highlights the cooler part of the vintage expressing cypress, mushrooms and forest floor, with some spices of nutmeg and cinnamon. On the palate, fruits are rich and powerful dominated by ripe black cherry and plum. The mouthfeel is balanced with soft, silky tannins and vibrant acidity. An uplifting finish with a hint of citrus, lingering dark chocolate and tobacco. 2016 is an extraordinary vintage that will age gracefully for a decade or more.
In the southeast corner of Chianti Classico, the Arcanum Estate has 223 acres of vines- but this vineyard is nothing like the rest of Chianti. While most of the region is planted with Sangiovese vines, the grapes at Arcanum are all Bordeaux varietals; Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an ideal showcase for the remarkably talented French winemaker Pierre Seillan. Here, Seillan blends 51% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Cabernet Franc with 1% Petit Verdot to create a truly super Tuscan blend. The grapes for this wine come from a warmer, well-exposed section of the estate, where the grapes get well ripened and take on a voluptuous quality. Aged 12 months in 30% new French oak barrels, Il Fauno shows ripe blackberry, cherry, spiced and mineral notes along with lively acidity that allows the flavors linger on a long finish. Super Tuscan indeed! Pair with a hearty Bistecca Fiorentino or other grilled or braised meats. We also suggest decanting this wine for 30 minutes prior to serving.
